The Graduate Student Society at Simon Fraser University
Annual General Meeting—Feb 4, 2015
The Graduate Student Society’s Annual General Meeting was called to order at 1:30 pm, with a functional quorum of 83 present members. The Executives presented the GSS Annual Report and highlighted important achievements such as: the Official Intervener Status that the GSS was granted for the Kinder Morgan Pipeline, the major budget increase for the Emergency Grocery Card Program (through donation solicitation), and the important work they have done to further define the roles of the Executive Committee.
Yuki Sugiyama, the GSS Auditor, reviewed the Financial Statements for the 2013-2014 fiscal year. The membership unanimously approved receiving of the audited financial statements. Highlights included a budget surplus of $58,426.00, which will be allocated to the Organization’s Contingency Fund. This is also the first fiscal year without the Capital Levy Fee. Throughout this fiscal year, we established the Operating Contingency Fund, which will provide the GSS with reserved funds in the case of unexpected expenses.
The Executive Committee had important announcements, which included:
- Voting for the Transit Referendum will be in March
- Sustainable SFU will be having their AGM on March 11 at 4 pm
- Deadline for SPICES application is Feb 11, 2015
- Information regarding the Spring Elections will be circulated through SFU emails
Due to the efforts of the GSS members, we were able to reach quorum of 101 members by 2:14 pm to vote on the Resolutions. The results are listed below:
“Special resolution A: Changing Council Speaker Appointment from semesterly to annually.”
Be It Resolved That the GSS By-Law V Section 14 be amended to change the Council Speaker Appointment from a semesterly to an annual appointment, as circulated at the February 4, 2015 AGM.
“Special resolution B: Synchronizing Director Elections into a Single, Spring Election.”
Be It Resolved That the GSS By-Law Section 16-22 be amended to synchronize the Executive Committee elections into a single Spring election, as circulated at the February, 4, 2015 AGM.
“Special resolution C: Adding a term limit for Executive Committee Members” was carried.
Be It Resolved That for an amendment that no single graduate student can be elected to any one position for more than two full terms, and for no more than four terms in any position.
