Vision Statement

The Benefit Plan Committee of the Graduate Student Society furthers the goals of representing and advocating for members of the Society by providing a fair and comprehensive health benefit plan that meets the health needs of students during their timeΒ of study.

Core Competencies

The Benefit Plan Committee will be able provide students practical skills to use in the workforce. Each member of the Benefit Plan Committee will be able to acquire the following skills:

  • Describe how a health insurance policy works in British Columbia
  • Analyze surveys and graphical data to assess, evaluate, and interpret the usage of a health benefits plan
  • Analyze each individual health benefit plan service, including cost per student, usage rates, and loss ratios for the insurance company
  • Critically assess the role of a health benefits plan for a low-income population
  • Develop an effective communications plan for the implementation of each policy year
  • Develop and adapt communication delivery that is responsive to specific graduate groups
  • Fairly adjudicate health benefit plan appeals
  • Be able to monitor and evaluate the implementation of the health benefit plan
  • Develop, review, and adjudicate the Health Benefits Plan Bursary for students with severe financial need
  • Understand how different services of the health benefit plan are developed
  • Understand the role of a governing body when assessing and implementing a health benefit
