Hello Graduate Students!

The GSS is holding its 2023 Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, February 28 at 4pm. Members are welcome to join this meeting via Zoom (if you did not receive the link yet, please email ASAP, using your SFU account only:

  • Online (link has already been emailed to all members who RSVP’ed at least one hour in advance of the meeting (see link below).

The meeting is open to all members in good standing of the Society, i.e., all currently enrolled (not on leave) graduate students at SFU, and is one of the most important events of the year for the GSS’s general membership.

AGM 2023 Agenda

1. Call to Order

2. Land Acknowledgement

The GSS occupies shared Coast Salish territories, including the traditional and unceded lands of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), Tsleil-Waututh, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Kwikwetlem, Semiahmoo, Tsawwassen, Katzie, Kwantlen, Qayqayt, and numerous Stó:lō First Nations.

3. Appointment of Speaker

Be It Resolved That the assembled GSS membership appoint Pierre Cenerelli as Speaker of the 2023 AGM.

4. Appointment of Secretary

Be It Resolved That the assembled GSS membership appoint Saba Ghezili as Secretary of the 2023 AGM.

5. Declaration of Quorum

  • Full quorum is 100 GSS members in good standing
  • Functional quorum is 20 GSS members in good standing (however, point 12 below can only be discussed, not be officially adopted)

6. Adoption of the Agenda

Be It Resolved That the assembled GSS members adopt the agenda of the February 28, 2022 AGM, as circulated (or amended).

7. Approval of the February 2022 AGM Minutes

Be It Resolved That the assembled GSS members adopt the minutes of the February 8, 2022 AGM, as circulated (or amended).

8. Speaking privileges for our guest speakers

Be It Resolved That the assembled GSS members provide Gary Chun (auditor at Thompkins Wozny LLP), Harjap Grewal (GSS Advocate and Policy Advisor), and Jeff Derksen (SFU Dean of Graduate Studies) with speaking privileges at the February 28, 2023 Annual General Meeting of the Graduate Student Society.

9. Reception of the audited Financial Statements for 2021 – 2022 and auditor’s report

  • Will be presented by Gary Chun of Tompkins Wozny LLP, followed by a question period

10. Appointment of the auditor for the 2022-2023 Fiscal Year:

Be It Resolved That the GSS membership appoint Gary Wozny of Tompkins Wozny LLP as our auditor for the 2022 ‐ 2023 Fiscal Year.

11. Reception of the GSS Annual Report

12. Regulations approved or modified by Graduate Council since February 1, 2022

Between February 2022 and January 2023, only one policy change was approved by the GSS Council: At their March 15, 2022 meeting, Councillors approved a new Executive Committee Terms of Reference that consolidated existing policy documents related to that committee and provided a Terms of Reference for the only committee of Council that did yet not have one. While the Executive Committee is also governed by the GSS Constitution and By-Laws, the Terms of Reference provides the GSS Council with a document that they can adapt as needed to better guide the Executive Committee in their work and responsibilities. 13. Motion to approve changes to the GSS Bylaws

Be It Resolved That, based on the recommendation of the Governance Committee, the assembled GSS Membership approve changes to By-Law II (2) and By-Law V (12) of the GSS Constitution and By-Laws, as presented.

14. Presentation

The outgoing Dean of Graduate Studies, Dr. Jeff Derksen, will make a short presentation and field questions from our members. This will also be our chance to thank Dr. Derksen for all of his work in favour of SFU’s graduate students.
