Holiday Hamper Program

In 2014, the GSS began the Holiday Hamper program enabling low-income graduate student families to have a happy and stress-free holiday season with the support of generous sponsors from SFU’s community.

In light of COVID-19, we will not be able to provide physical Holiday Hampers for pick up for the 2022-2023 academic year. Instead, we will provide families with an assortment of electronic gift cards.

Applicant Information

This program is eligible to individuals who satisfy ALL of the following requirements:

  • Are currently registered in an SFU graduate program; AND,
  • Live with at least one dependent child (under 21 years of age) of your own; AND,
  • Have been assessed to receive the GSS Family Subsidy funding in the past year (between September 2022 and now); OR have been assessed to receive bursary funding by SFU Financial Aid and Awards in the past year (between September 2022 and now).

Successful applicants will be matched with generous groups and individuals who will provide a donation to the GSS. 100% of the donations will be used to disburse an assortment of electronic gift cards that will be sent to families in December.

Please note that there is a limited number of sponsors and not all applicants will receive gift cards; the number of gift cards depends on the number of sponsors.

Sponsor Information

Sponsors can donate:

– electronic gift cards valued between $25-$50 for each individual family member; OR

– electronic gift cards valued between $100-$200 for the entire family; OR

– make cash donations instead of the electronic gift cards.

***100% of the donations made to the GSS will be used for the Holiday Hamper Program.

Sponsors are responsible for ensuring that the GSS receives the donations by Monday, December 11th, 2023, at 4:00pm. To arrange for a cash payment, please contact help@sfugradsociety.ca .

Sponsors will receive a description of their family’s composition, which will give sponsors an idea of how much they should donate.

Sponsors may request a certain family composition or demographic; however, the primary objective is to match as many families with donors as possible, so not all requests can be honoured. To protect the anonymity of families, requests for families from specific departments or faculties will not be honoured.

Timeline
Sponsor & Family Registration Opens: Friday, November 10th, 2023, at 9:00am
Graduate Family Application Deadline: Thursday, December 7th, 2023, at 10:00am
Sponsor Registration Closes: Monday, December 11th, 2023, at 10:00am
Late November – Mid December: Gift cards will be purchased and sent to graduate student families.

Exceptions to these deadline may be possible.
